One of our church members, Mrs. Shirley Evarts, founded the Old Stone Church Playschool in the fall of 1962. It started as a playgroup with eight children attending its first class. It is sponsored by the Church Board of Trustees as an outreach program to the East Haven community and to other towns in the area. It is non-sectarian and was not organized for profit. It became licensed with the State Department of Public Health in January of 1963. As the class size grew with the growing interest of the community, two more classrooms were added. In 1987 on its 25th Anniversary, the original classroom was dedicated and named The Shirley Evarts Room after its first teacher and founder. In 1990, a Pre-K program (for five-year-olds) was started. We will be entering our 50th Playschool year this fall.


We have a teacher to child ratio of 1 to 6 for the three-year-old program and 1 to 7 for our four-year-old and Pre-K programs.

Class size is 10 to 12 children for our three-year-olds, and 12 to 14 for the four-year-old and Pre-K programs.

There are two teachers to each class of children. All the teachers attend professional development workshops to meet State licensing requirements.

The Old Stone Church Playschool is licensed by The State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health, Child Day Care Unit.

The East Shore Health Department and the East Haven Fire Marshall routinely inspect the school.

The Playschool Director is a member and officer of the Shoreline Association for The Education of Young Children, and a member of The East Haven Early Childhood Collaborative.

All are welcome to join us as we recognize 50 years of providing a quality and affordable preschool education for the young children in our town and surrounding communities.

We invite all former teachers, students, and their families, and all our friends in the communities we serve to join us in this celebration complete with food, refreshments and entertainment!
