PROGRAM

At Playschool, children learn to use scissors, glue, and paint, to recognize colors and shapes and their printed name, among other things.  But the most important things they learn are to get along with other children, share toys, take turns, listen to their teachers, and follow the directions.

The class meets together at a circle time to listen to stories and poems, play musical instruments and letter, number and shape games, as well as exercise fun, finger plays, and sharing experiences.  We talk about the days of the week, the months of the year, and chart the weather each day.  We would like the children to be happy and at the same time be excited about learning.

Our schedule is flexible and on a beautiful sunny day we may forget all our planned activities and go for a walk or play games on the church lawn.  We enjoy our playground with sandbox activities, the slide, and other equipment to further develop the children’s fine and gross motor skills.

In our Pre-K program, while much of the emphasis is focused on setting a basic foundation for future academic success, including developing strong social skills and understanding how to respect classroom rules and routines, there is an academic component that is a little more structured and builds on the above.

Below is a sample of activities the children enjoy at our Playschool.

We enjoy field trips to the Apple Orchard in the fall and to Lighthouse Park in the spring for our end-of-the-year picnics. We celebrate the holidays with a Halloween Trick or Treat Walk along Main Street; a Thanksgiving Feast with the other classrooms; and Christmas sing-a-longs that includes a special visit from Santa.  The Easter Bunny makes a visit as well.  Our St. Patrick's Day dance and sing-a-long and the celebration of our May Pole Day with the parents are always a fun time.  We learn about children from other countries and have a Teddy Bear Tea Party.  We hold a Back to School Night, and parent/teacher conferences.  The children, led by their teachers, have a Graduation program and party to end the school year.  Parents are invited to take part in all the activities - parent involvement is encouraged at our school.  And it's a great way for parents to meet other families and be involved in their child's early childhood experience.
